Oil shale is a fine-grained, sedimentary rock containing a solid material (kerogen) that, when heated, converts into a synthetic liquid fuel similar to oil, or into a shale gas similar to petroleum-derived natural gas. Oil shale deposits exist in at least 27 countries globally. The largest and highest quality oil shale deposits worldwide exist in sparsely populated areas of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. |
